| Growing up in Manhattan, Bogdanovich first aspired to be an actor: he studied under Stella Adler, had bit parts in some 1950s television dramas and performed (and worked backstage) in summer stock. At the same time, he was an obsessive movie-watcher, viewing as many as 500 films a year, and he became an aficionado of the director-oriented writings of 'Francois Truffaut' and other French "New Wave" critic-filmmakers. In the 1960s, Bogdanovich began publishing interviews and essays on movies in "Esquire" and other magazines. He got his first filmmaking job with Roger Corman. Bogdanovich's big-budget directorial debut, _Last Picture Show, The (1971)_, an elegaic post-Western, was one of the most impressive Hollywood movies of its era, and remains the high point of Bogdanovich's critical reputation. In personal terms, the movie marked the breakup of Bogdanovich's marriage with Polly Platt (whom some saw as a dominant creative influence on "Picture Show"), replaced by Cybill Shepherd. Bogdanovich's next two films, with 'Ryan O'Neal', were commercially successful but not very subtle exercises in the "classic" Hollywood style of Howard Hawks and Raoul Walsh. His next two movies, in which he seemingly tried to do for Shepherd what Josef von Sternberg did for Marlene Dietrich, finished Bogdanovich's bankable period, and the end of his relationship with Shepherd soon followed. While directing _They All Laughed (1981)_, Bogdanovich fell in love with Dorothy Stratten; soon afterwards, she was murdered by her estranged husband. (Bogdanovich himself financed the distribution of this movie, which Bogdanovich has called his most personal, and lost most of his money in the process.) He married Stratten's sister in 1988. Of his post-1973 movies, only _Mask (1985/I)_ has made any money to speak of--and financial calamities such as _Thing Called Love, The (1993)_ cast some doubt on his future as a Hollywood director--but Bogdanovich remains influential as a historian and upholder of American filmmaking traditions.
